Aluminum welding, aluminum mobile welding using tested stick aluminum welding rods

In mobile welding service welders face small aluminum fabrication projects, and small aluminum repair projects such as aluminum handrail repair, equipment aluminum ladder repair, and aluminum container leak. Fixing aluminum prongs on an aluminum railing on a bridge serves as a perfect example of our specialization. The environment is windy, and we have to move fast therefore Mig aluminum welding is out of question due to a necessity of building a enclose tent for every location. Tig aluminum welding is also impossible since it would take forever to do it and the tent still would have to be erected. Any welder who has welded aluminum with aluminum welding rods knows exactly how difficult it is to make a decent aluminum weld. Surely, aluminum welding rod manufactures assure you of their good quality welding rods. Well, we have tested aluminum rods coming from 9 different manufacturers and out of 9 manufacturers we have found only one that has developed an aluminum welding rod comfortable enough to leave a decent aluminum weld. Most aluminum stick welders operating with an aluminum 3 series rods are not able to compete with our aluminum 4 series rod. On-site and In-shop aluminum cast welding, aluminum repair and aluminum crack repair

For welding cast aluminum, we utilize Tig aluminum welding because the welder can see how the cast reacts during the welding process and if the welder achieves a proper penetration with the crack completely penetrated and melted.  Proper machine setup is necessary to avoid over heating and proper weld preparation is also necessary to increase penetration.

Our technological advantage of cast aluminum welding is preferable when a dimension preservation is necessary due to mechanical assembly of the casted parts and weld can only be placed in non interactive areas. In such situation, the way how the welder modifies the weld to increase its strength is crucial for success of the whole project.

Another area where we exceed expectations in cast aluminum welding is where we have to correct casting defects, cast cracks in multi-layer cast or very thin cast as many Italian made casts are. In such examples the temperature control and preheat temperature are crucial to overall project success.

On-site and In-shop  iron cast welding, welding cast steel in controlled temperature

Welding cast iron and welding cast steel requires excellent welding skills, knowledge of metallurgy, and technologically advanced welding rods. Cast iron repair and more specifically cast iron crack repair depends on the iron content in the cast. If there is more carbon in the cast then brazing would be more desired, but if there is more iron then probably welding would be more desired. The cast steel is definitely more difficult to weld than cast iron simply because the hidden imperfections or cracks that lay in cast steel, difficulty to predict the direction of thermal expansion of steel cast if we face multi ribbed cast, and a high potential of developing new cracks due to stress inside the cast. Mistakes can happen and they are very costly. The steel casts are extremely expensive, large, heavy and highly unpredictable.

Our technological advantage lays in In-Place and On-Site Mobile welding of cast steel. Simply put you do not have to send the steel cast to the special shop and pay for cast removal, very expensive cast repair service, and installation back. Removal of large cracked steel cast can be very risky, and the crack can and will elongate during the transportation. Our advantage of strong mechanical background, metallurgical knowledge and highly advanced welding rod technology allows to implement welding of cast steel in place.

The mechanical background offers knowledge of forces acting on the cast that caused the damage and offers knowledge of techniques how to prepare the cast, so it can expand and contract freely. So called “breathing” is very important. The metallurgical knowledge is crucial since it involves certain calculations as they refer to inter ribs expansion and contraction as well as it allows to determine points where to heat cast. The heat cast procedures involve pre-heat, corrective heat cast during welding and slow down heat after welding is finished. However, the major advantage lays in highly advanced and very expensive welding rods. These rods make all the difference. Cracked engine block repair of expensive cars and semi-trucks – on site Tig welding of small cracks in steel cast

When talking about cracked engine block repair using Tig technique we clearly have in mind very small cracks that have not penetrated the engine block through yet or we are talking about corrections of cast defects. In most cases, however, we have in mind repairing damages resulting from the accidents, when owner is faced with a choice of replacing an engine or do some minor repairs on the engine block. Prime example are brackets that are extended from the engine block and serve as bases to attach different car or semi-truck parts. Typical example would be a water pump bracket. Additionally, we use this technique to plug the threaded holes on the engine block that are being repaired due to severe damaged threads or even chipped wall. The estimated depth of such repair is about ½ “. We excel in rebuilding of pin seat if the seat is and the pin are made from dissimilar metals, such as aluminum and steel. Potential clients must keep in mind that cracked engine block repair using Tig are expensive and therefore unpopular. Please note* the repairs of a completely penetrated through the thickness of the block crack is almost impossible and costly. It would involve welding from outside and inside of the block with the complete weld penetration going through the thickness of the block. That is why we have employed our epoxy glues to provide a semi – permanent fix in these extreme cases.

Within our on-site epoxy service, we are handling at present time about 24 different metal epoxy and metal glue, compounds with an additional variety of additives to epoxy resins. Our epoxy resins are custom made by us in order to provide epoxy compound with physical and chemical capabilities that will perform well in your projects.

Our technological advantage in epoxy resin application with custom made epoxy compounds is well supported by manufacturers’ training, our extensive field experience, epoxy tests performed in our shop and our continues quest for better epoxy compounds. The metal epoxy provides a semi – permanent and relatively long-standing solutions in situations where welding services are too expensive, impossible to do, or simply timing constrains of continues production do not allow for welding employment.

When you are faced with a leaky container,  cracked engine block, water leaking heat exchangers and they replacement is not possible, traditional repairs including welding are too expensive or impossible, and you are under timing constrain to fix the problem, our epoxy resin service is a solution. Corrosion service, corrosion protection with industrial strength rust inhibitor

Our on-site corrosion service in industrial and commercial settings has stemmed from our epoxy service with a variety of projects where we have implemented epoxy glues in order to cover rust damaged surfaces (pitting corrosion), holes caused by rust, or even elements with severely damaged welding integrity. In our on-site corrosion service, we employ epoxy-based rust inhibitor and then we cover the surface with a 1/16” epoxy resin that resists multiple chemicals, moisture, impact and friction. To our disposition we have two kinds of rust inhibitors pending the degree of rust damage.

Our on-site corrosion service in industrial and commercial settings is supported by mobile welding services in terms of surfacing rods and wires. The use of technologically advanced surfacing rods and wires allows for rebuilt of rust damaged thick elements. However, the welder should consider in such situation warpage effect on the whole element that can severely affect the element’s strength and its dimensions.

We provide custom metal fabrication service in two setups: on-site welding fabrication and in shop set up precision metal fabrication. In many instances, the welding fabrication is performed on customer’s site. These instances involve re-fabrication projects, modification projects and projects where we are required to work closely with other contractors to accomplish the project. All precision metal fabrication projects that involve custom stainless steel fabrication, aluminum fabrication and precision steel fabrication are performed in our small welding shop in London Ontario.

Our technological advantages in on-site welding fabrication are focusing on set-ups improvements that include portable supports that can handle significant weights and employment of tent that allows to perform welding if it rains for couple of hours. We stay efficient with our on-site service by employing Flux Core welding machine and allowing your helpers to perform non-welding essential duties. In some cases, we can employ up to 4 of your helpers per one welder – fabricator with a good setup.

Our technological advantages of precision metal fabrication performed in our small welding shop stem from variety of possible welding techniques, variety of metal used, and strong mechanical background of certified millwrights. In cases where the fabrication project involves precision fabrication that will be precisely assembled on site with accuracy of 2-3 mm, will be mounted on the machine, will perform some mechanical function and fabrication process has to be performed along the mechanical assembly process, or is a prototype of a machine, JW Portable Welding & Repairs performs the best. We perform aluminum fabrication, stainless steel fabrication and steel fabrication using Mig and Tig for all metals. In some instances, we also use extremely high tensile rods for space saving while maintaining the weld strength.


On – site welding stainless steel using SMAW, stick stainless steel welding rods

On site welding stainless steel using, S.M.A.W. welding and stick stainless steel welding rods requires precision, knowledge, and a very good welding machine. We perform stick welding stainless steel in kitchens, restaurants and in construction setup helping well drillers assemble their stainless steel water casings during their water well drilling.

Our technological advantage lays in the construction site of the market where the welder is obligated to perform an excellent quality stainless steel seal welding within the grove in difficult environmental conditions. Additionally, the stainless steel welding has to be performed on lifting logs in vertical position to allow lifting by crane of stainless steel casing. We excel in such projects with precise preheat for moisture elimination and slug elimination, proper rod positioning and very precise of welding machine setup. Anybody who welded stainless steel pipes without welding tig root, knows exactly what I am talking about. The embedded slug left by novice stainless steel welder definitely does not qualify as a sealed stainless steel weld. Moreover, long vertical welds when welding stainless steel cause many problems for novice stainless steel welders due to heat accumulation and incorrect machine setups.


On-site heavy equipment repairs of construction equipment, excavation equipment – cracked material, cracked welds, element re-builds

On-site heavy equipment repairs of construction equipment and excavation equipment requires ability to understand the size of damages, their main reason and then provide suitable welding rods to fix these damages. Saying from our experience the traditional 7018 welding rods are useless for fixing these cracks and high tensile rods must be employed. We also recommend “fish plates” at least 3/8” thick with the weld surround the “fish plate” of the same size. In areas where abrasion forces play a major role the surfacing rods can help, however the more efficient setup is Mig for surface welding. Construction environment is rough, and many equipment operators exceed the strength capacity of their machines therefore good quality high tensile welding should be finished with good quality and hard surface welding.


Welding of cracked material or repairs of cracked welds.
  • Cracked welds are usually signs of structural failures due to vibration or thermal expansion. We remove the existing welds and replace them with welds made with alloys of high tensile strength. In many cases, the selection of welding rod becomes more complicated when the weld is exposed to high mechanical abrasion or chemical environment. Please account for at least 5 – 7 day of shipping time for the more technologically advanced rods.  If necessary, we measure the temperature during the welding process which allows us to implement anti-cracking techniques such as weld alternation, backing plate alternation, and warpage corrections.
  • Cracked material is a sign of severe structural failure due to impact, vibration or thermal expansion. A redesign is recommended first, however, additional strengthening focused on stress relocation can prolong the usage of your equipment. The additional strengthening takes the form of plating and/or welds that take different shapes to allow the stress to spread and move to different, more supported locations.
Welding repair of iron cast crack and aluminum cast crack
  • Simple crack that penetrates the thickness of the cast. The repair is performed from inside and outside of the cracked cast.
  • Broken piece – the repair is possible if the broken piece does not hold any significant stress. Certain precautions have to be taken if the broken piece has a sealing function.
  • Broken piece is lost – we attempt to fill the space by welding. The repair is possible but it takes considerable time and minor cracks can appear. The success of this repair depends on many factors including cast structure, a thickness of the cast, position, and access to the welding spot. Other cracks that may have been hidden could show up during the welding process due to the increase in temperature. The shape and thickness of the aluminum or mild steel piece play a major role in the repairs’ success.
Use of epoxy resin, epoxy adhesive, (epoxy glue for metal and plastic)

The use of epoxy adhesives and epoxy based metal glues to repair cracks in sheet metal or casts. Sometimes, the welding is simply impossible due to a variety of reasons, it is too expensive or simply too costly. In such situations, we may recommend using epoxy’s to repair the cracks or seal the leaks. At present time we have in our disposition about 24 different types of epoxy adhesives for a variety of applications.

High rise welding – welding on high elevation

High-rise welding – welding on high elevation using self-propelled small welding machine that is lifted by a crane, or two people for CWB quality “STICK weld” (up to 180A, reach 100ft). The machine follows the welder like a vacuum cleaner, avoiding piles of material and construction debris. The machine easily moves through door openings, therefore we do not preoccupy your crane for relocation on the higher floors.

Welding outside and inside malls/retail outlets and plazas

Welding in places that may be noise or pollution sensitive. This can include the outside of apartment buildings, outside of malls/retail outlets and plazas. Our diesel welding machine is located in an enclosed trailer for noise reduction and the exhaust is directed towards the ground. Small exhaust filters additionally reduce the exhaust gases (up to 300A, reach 600ft).

  • Welding odors have to be eliminated inside retail malls/outlets, restaurants, laundries, and movie theaters. In these conditions we employ our portable TIG and MIG machines and connect them to a hydro outlet (110V/220V up to 200A, reach TIG 25ft, MIG 12ft). Additionally, we have a portable exhaust vacuum to eliminate the residue.

Mobile “STICK” and TIG stainless steel welding used to repair steel pipes. We use our diesel welding machine, which is located in an enclosed trailer to ensure noise reduction.

Aluminum emergency repair welding - S.M.A.W. ( STICK) aluminum welding

Mobile “STICK” aluminum welding with our technologically advanced rods in places and conditions where other techniques cannot be employed. This smaller mobile unit is more useful and effective than the other mobile machines in this circumstance.

Aluminum structure welding using push – pull gun or spool gun

Portable aluminum MIG welding using push-pull gun or spool gun for welding structural elements made from aluminum such as beams and columns. This machine requires 220v and 50A to operate at its full potential. For welding up to 3/8 thickness, the machine can be hooked up to 30A and 220V. Using a generator is possible but can be costly.

Aluminum precise welding – aluminum tig welding

Portable aluminum TIG welding with a portable water-cooled TIG welding machine. Used for “In-Place”, precise aluminum welding of small components. These types of welds are usually required in situations where “STICK” welding is not possible due to its impurity. MIG welding in this instance may be too costly due to the size of the weld. In these situations, we utilize TIG welding of aluminum components.

High tensile S.M.AW. welding

Welding of mild steel with high tensile rods in situations where the size of the weld has to be minimized but the strength has to be increased or in places exposed to impact, vibration, or abrasion. Each category of high tensile rods has its requirements and we use them accordingly as per manufacturing recommendations. We also have in our disposal welding rods with superior tensile strength that are highly resistant to mechanical abrasion. Testing is required for materials with a high-strength objective, established and continued penetration.
