Vertical Welds on Heavy Material (High-Rise Apartment Building)

JW Portable Welding & Repairs supports the builders of high-rise apartment buildings and general contractors who modify steel structures on high elevations with our welding and repair services. JW Portable Welding & Repairs is CWB and WSIB Certified.

This project offered some major challenges that we were ultimately able to overcome. First, we were faced with gaps between the anchored plate and the channel, which were up to 1/2” due to the misalignment of plates anchored to the concrete. The misalignment of 3/8” or 1/2” fits between the tolerances of concrete work but forms a significant challenge for a CWB welder. Second, we were restricted in the size of the weld due to the maintenance of the channels’ length. Third, the misaligned plates were covered in concrete that went between the plate and the form during the pouring process.

JW Portable Welding & Repairs is quality driven and are committed to modifying our welding techniques to fit with the existing condition. To support this we have:

  1. Cleaned the anchored plates from concrete and rust
  2. Grinded the protective paint from channels in places where we were going to weld
  3. Increased weld size to the maximum possible size due to the significant gaps between channel and the anchored plate (gap up to 3/8”)
  4. Introduced the supporting material in place of 1/2” gap
    • welded with maximum weld size; the supporting material to the plate
    • welded with a maximum weld size; the supporting material to the channel

JW Portable Welding & Repairs specializes in mobile & portable welding services needed in construction of high-rise buildings. Further specialization involves modifications of platforms, stair cases and handrails on higher levels. The tools we have at our disposal include:

  • the main unit equipped with diesel driven Lincoln welding machine (includes 800ft of welding cables)
  • torch unit (400ft hoses)
  • self-propelled welding machine that can be lifted by the crane and is small enough to travel between scaffolds
  • portable machine operating at 110V
  • portable machine operating at 220V
  • portable set of torches

  • Project must be significant enough to warrant 10 hours of work per day with at least 1 full day of work
  • Client pays for travel from London to the Site as well as accommodation if necessary

During the initial inspection, we determine the details of technological requirements and safety in order to ensure a safe and efficient working environment. We run schedule of at least 4 days in advance for high-rise welding services for all new customers.  JW Portable Welding & Repairs devotes special attention to projects involving mobile welding in the following areas:

  • Toronto
  • Mississauga
  • Brampton
